Tribe Sports Report

MHS Cross Country . Anyone interested in running for the Mississinewa High School Cross Country team in the Fall of 2018 should attend an informational meeting on Thursday, May 17th at 2:45pm in the Upper Cafeteria at MHS. Attendance is mandatory to discuss the summer training program, and requirements for the fall season with Coach Van Winkle.

IMG_4851MHS Girls Tennis . The Lady Indians finished the season in a rain-shortened Concordia Invitational on Saturday. In round one Mississinewa went 4-1, and was able to finish 1-1 in round two against Canterbury. The Lady Indians finished with a 13-2 regular season record including the Homestead Invitational title and the CIC Championship. Tyra Stanley finished the season with a perfect 20-0 record to become only the third Mississinewa Girls Tennis player to accomplish this mark. Mississinewa starts sectional play on Wednesday at Marion High School at 5:00pm.

MHS Cheerleading . The 2018-2019 Varsity and Junior Varsity squads were announced after try-outs this past weekend. Congratulations to Mackenzie Ressler, Cadence David, Tayler Gray, Nataliegh McVicker, Karsyn Fisher, Miah Wright, Kendal Emmons, Karalyn Moon, Abigail Oyler, Madison Ayala, Haleigh Skeens, Paityn Martin, Alexis Tignor, Juliana Smith, Makayla Donis, and Jacqueline Smith.

MHS Baseball . Mississinewa lost 15-0 on Saturday to a very good Homestead team for the final home game. The Indians face Taylor on Wednesday on the road to conclude the regular season. JV lost to Homestead on Saturday 10-5.

MHS Softball . Lady Indians defeated Adams Central in extra innings at the Ole Miss Round-Robin on Saturday 8-7. The team completed the sweep by beating Angola 7-2 in the final game.

MHS Boys Golf . Indians Golf finishes the CIC in 3rd on Saturday. Breyton Berryhill, Josh Dakin, and Ty Corey earned All-Conference recognition with scores of 85.

Tonight’s Events . Boys Golf and JV Baseball travel to Alexandria this evening. JV Softball will host Marion at 5:00pm while the varsity team travels to Northwestern. RJB Baseball will play at Kokomo while RJB Golf hosts the Wildcats at Shady Hills. RJB Softball hosts Wabash in the park at 5:30pm, and rounding out the evening the RJB Soccer team will host Eastern at Mississinewa High School at 6:00pm.


Today’s Sports World Update

NBA . The Boston Celtics dominated the Cleveland Cavaliers 108-83 on Sunday evening. Jaylen Brown led the Celtics with 23 points while Kevin Love managed 17 for the Cavs leading scorer. Golden State opens up the Western Conference Finals at Houston tonight at 9:00pm (TNT).

PGA Tour . Webb Simpson shot 18-under to win the Players Championship on Sunday even with a final round 73. Tiger Woods came in tied for 11th with a score of 11-under.

NHL . The Washington Capitals took a 2-0 lead over Tampa Bay on Sunday with a 6-2 win. Two players had three points, and Braden Holtby grabbed 33 saves. Vegas and Winnipeg play tonight in Game Two. The Jets lead 1-0.

Racing . Will Power won the Grand Prix of Indy on Saturday, and Kevin Harvick took Kansas in the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series.

Unified Special Olympics, Tennis wins at Ball State, Tigers trouble Indians in CIC

Unified Special Olympics . Mississinewa High School was the host of the Special Olympics event for Unified Game Day. Mississinewa’s own head of Exceptional Student Services Lisa Graham and an army of volunteers welcomed students from all five Grant County schools. For more information on this event, be sure to grab a copy of the Friday-edition of the Marion Chronicle-Tribune for a great article from Lucas Robinson and photography from Jeff Morehead including the featured image above.

MHS Baseball . The Indians lost to Alexandria last night 10-8 on the road in close conference game. Landen Swanner was credited with the loss on the mound after five innings pitched. Swanner gave up seven hits and seven walks while striking-out three. Cade Campbell went 3-4 with an RBI, a double, and two triples. Tyler Jakob hit 2-4 with two RBIs and a double. Landon Swanner batted 2-4 with two RBIs.

The Junior Varsity team fell to Tipton 13-8 at Atkinson Field.

MHS Softball . Mississinewa lost to Alexandria in the bottom of the 7th inning last night 1-0 in CIC action. Cierra Vasquez pitched in the loss against the Tigers allowing six hits with one strikeout. Lexi Cruzan went 3-4 at the plate, and Madison Stanley was 2-2 with a double.

The JV Lady Indians remained undefeated by beating Alexandria 8-1 in four innings. Ireland Thien earned the win on the mound pitching a no-hitter with seven strikeouts and three walks. Justyce Moore was 2-3 with two RBIs, Kylie Smalley was 2-3, and both Katie Hosier and Kaycee Sands added a hit and RBI to the win.

MHS Girls Tennis . Mississinewa moves to 13-2 on the season after defeating Burris last night at Ball State 4-1. Tyra Stanley remains undefeated at 3-Singles with her win last night and could join only two other players in Girls Tennis history with an undefeated season by completing a sweep on Saturday at Concordia. The JV Lady Indians split points with the Owls and tied 1-1.

RJB Athletics . No results were reported for R.J. Baskett events last night.

Weekend Events . There are no events for Friday, May 11. Girls Tennis will compete in the eight-team Concordia Invitational beginning at 9am on Saturday to wrap up their season. Baseball will host Homestead with the varsity game starting at 10:00am followed by a JV contest around noon. Lady Indians Softball will hold the 2018 Softball Round-Robin on Saturday. Mississinewa takes on Adams Central at 10:00am followed by the Lady Jets battling Angola around noon. The last game of the day will feature Mississinewa and Angola with the first pitch scheduled to occur around 1:15pm.

RJB Baseball travels to Logansport High School to take on Lincoln at 11:00am on Saturday.


Today’s Sports World Update

NBA . Cleveland will be in Boston to face the Celtics on Sunday in Game One of the Eastern Conference Finals. That game is available on ABC and ESPN at 3:30pm. On Monday, the Western Conference Finals begin in Houston as the Rockets take on Golden State at 9:00pm on TNT.

PGA Tour . Chasson Hadley sits atop the leaders at the Players Championship at the TPC Sawgrass in Florida. Hadley is 2-under after an opening round 66. Last year’s winner, Si Woo Kim is only one stroke back. Tiger Woods is projected to miss the cut and miss the weekend action after opening on Thursday with a 72.

NHL . The Washington Capitals enter their first conference finals in 20 years tonight as they take on the Tampa Bay Lightning at 8:00pm in Game One. The Las Vegas Knights open up their series against the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday at 7:00pm. All games can be seen on NBC and the NBC Sports Network.

Racing . The NASCAR Cup Series is at Kansas on Saturday for an 8:00pm race on Fox Sports One. The Grand Prix of Indianapolis at the Indy Motor Speedway kicks off on Saturday at 3:30pm. That race can be seen on ABC.

Panthers trouble for Indians, Stanley moves to 16-0, Track CIC tonight

MHS Softball . The Lady Indians dropped a conference game to Eastbrook last night 5-3 at Mississinewa. Cierra Vasquez and Jenna Berryhill struggled through an “off night” as they combined to hit 7 batters at the plate. Darci Patton was 2-4 with a double and an RBI while Madison Stanley went 1-3 with a double. Coach Miller and the Lady Indians prepare for a big Saturday as they will host a Round Robin tournament as the season closes down.

The JV squad shut down Eastbrook in 5 innings with a 22-6 victory. Kandis Downam pitched the win allowing 5 hits and striking out 4 batters. Kylie Smalley went 4-5 with 2 RBI’s, Katie Hosier was 3-4 at the plate, Kaycee Sands and Madison Dotterweich got 2 hits, and Justyce Moore had a triple.

MHS Girls Tennis . Mississinewa moved to 11-2 in Girls Tennis this year as they defeated Southwood last night 5-0. The Singles players were perfect on the night which means Tyra Stanley improved to 16-0 on the season at 3-Singles. Claire Surface won a singles match for the JV, but the JV team lost 3-1.

MHS Baseball . Mississinewa lost to Eastbrook last night at Atkinson Field 9-8 in the 8th inning of play. No statistics have been reported at this time.

No results were reported for RJB Athletics including golf, softball, and soccer. If the Indian fans have a result they would like to share after a contest for R.J. Baskett, that result can be emailed to MCSC Media Director Brooks Holloway at brooks_holloway@olemiss.k12.in.us.

 

Tonight’s Events . Boys Golf takes on Taylor at 4:30pm. Girls Tennis hosts Frankton at 5:00pm. Track & Field will travel to Oak Hill for the 2018 CIC Meet. Events begin at 5:30pm this evening. RJB Softball rounds out tonight’s events with a road trip to Cowan. The First pitch is scheduled for 5:30pm.


Today’s Sports World Update

NBA . On Tuesday evening, Houston and Golden State clinched their series 4-1 over Utah and New Orleans respectively. The Warriors and Rockets will kick-off the Western Conference Finals on Monday, May 14th in Texas at 9:00pm on TNT.

Boston leads Philadelphia 3-1 going into tonight’s Game 5 match-up. The Celtics will have home court at 8:00pm on TNT as they look to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals against Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

NHL . Winnipeg and Nashville will play Game 7 in Tennessee on Thursday at 8:00pm. Game 1 of the Capitals and Lightning series is slated for Friday.

MHS Baseball . Mississinewa lost 11-5 yesterday to the Marion Giants at Atkinson Field. The Giants scored 5 runs in the last two innings to pull away for the win. Senior Conner Fritch took the loss on the mound after 4 innings of pitching. Seth Maddox pitched a little over 2 innings in relief. Senior Cade McCoin led the Indians at the plate going 2-4 with a double, triple, and an RBI. Landen Swanner, Drew Castanon, and Tyler Jakob each added a hit for the Indians.

RJB Golf . The Junior Indians earned another win at Shady Hill defeating McCulloch 212-238 last night. 8th grader Ryan Scott shot a 39 to earn the medal.

RJB Soccer . Karver Jones, Mason Reel, and Evan Yoder each had two goals in an 8-0 win over the Kokomo Lady Wildcats last night Elliot Williams and Lia Luchetti each added a goal.

RJB Baseball . No results were reported.

RJB Softball . No results were reported.

Tonight’s Events . Softball faces Eastbrook tonight in a varsity-JV doubleheader as Baseball takes on the Panthers at Atkinson Field. Girls Tennis will host Southwood. All high school events start at 5:00pm this evening. RJB Golf takes on Wabash at Honeywell tonight at 5:00pm. RJB Softball will travel to Fairmount to play Madison Grant at 5:30pm, and RJB Soccer will play Oak Hill at 6:00pm at Mississinewa High School.


Today’s Sports World Update

NBA . Philadelphia avoided the sweep last night with a win over Boston 103-92. Dario Saric scored 25 points to help the 76ers stay alive. Cleveland swept the Toronto Raptors with a 128-93 win last night at home. Lebron James continued to lead the Cavs with 29 points on 12-19 shooting.

Game 5 action in the Western Conference begins tonight at 8:00pm on TNT. Houston hosts the Jazz in the early contest followed by New Orleans at Golden State. Houston and Golden State lead their series 3-1 and can look toward a match-up against each other with wins tonight.

NHL . Washington capitalized in overtime to defeat Pittsburgh last night 2-1 to claim the series. Brayden Holtby had 21 saves for Capitals. Nashville forced a Game 7, scheduled for Thursday, with Winnipeg with a 4-0 win last night. Two players had 3 points in the game. Nashville will host the final game in the series and can be seen on Thursday at 8:00pm on the NBC Sports Network.

Coach Fleming reaches 500, Baseball & Softball win big, and Boys Golf triumphs at Northfield

MHS Baseball . The Indians defeated Wabash on Saturday 13-5. Mississinewa is now 10-7 on the season. Owen Felver pitched 6 strong innings for the win. Colin Yoder was 3-5 with a triple, home run, and 2 RBIs. Cade McCoin went 3-3 with a triple and 2 home runs, and Jalen Martin was 2-3 with 2 RBIs.

MHS Girls Tennis . On Saturday, the Lady Indians helped Coach Bruce Fleming pick up his 500th career win over South Adams 3-2 before falling in the doubleheader to Mount Vernon 3-2. Mississinewa Girls Tennis is now 10-2 this Spring. Tyra Stanley went undefeated throughout both matches at 3-Singles.

MHS Softball . Coach Miller and his Lady Indians swept Ft. Wayne Snider 6-0 and 7-2 on Saturday. Jenna Berryhill and Cierra Vasquez both earned wins on the mound. Junior Varsity pitcher Ireland Thien made an appearance on the mound in Game Two. Amaya David went 1-1 with a double and 2 RBIs in Game One. Shelby Goble highlighted the second game going 4-4 with a double and 2 RBIs.

MHS Boys Golf . Ty Corey and Josh Dakin led the Indians on the links Saturday to the Northfield Invitational title. Corey shot a 75, and Dakin a 78. Mississinewa had a team score of 322 which gives the team a 2-1 record in invitational play. Coach Reed and the Indians are 7-0 in regular season matches.

IMG_1377MHS Track & Field . On Friday, Mississinewa took on the Argyll Relays at Madison Grant. The boys team won the meet winning 6 of 13 events. Heisman Skeens won the long jump at 19’4. Girls track placed 2nd at the Argyll Relays just behind Jay County. Carli Fones won the 100m at a time of 13.16. Here are the relay teams that won for Mississinewa:

  • Boys 4×100 (45.31): Skeens, Kaden Cole, Elijah Standridge, Tabias Mead
  • Boys 4×400 (3:41): Josh O’Connell, Andre Sallade, Standridge, Cory Quakenbush
  • Boys 4×800 (9:33): Jacob Ehmer, Zak Huffman, Collin Coffey, Brennan Butche
  • Boys Sprint Medley (1:37): Quakenbush, Mead, Standridge, Skeens
  • Boys Distance Medley (12:45): Ehmer, O’Connell, Huffman, Butche

Tonight’s Events . JV Baseball travels to Marion while the varsity team hosts the Giants at 5:00pm. RJB Golf plays McCulloch at Shady Hills teeing off at 5:00pm. RJB Baseball is the last game to start in the 5:00pm slot as they take on Highland in the park. RJB Softball is on the road to Eastbrook at 5:30pm, and RJB Soccer will kick-off at Kokomo at 6:00pm.


Today’s Sports World Update

PGA Tour . Jason Day shot 12-under to win $1.4 million and take the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow on Sunday. Day was formerly ranked number one in the world.

NBA . Golden State took down New Orleans on Sunday 118-92 to go up 3-1 in their Western Conference series. Kevin Durant scored 38 points on 15-27 shooting, while Anthony Davis led the Pelicans with 26.

The Houston Rockets defeated the Utah Jazz 100-87. Harden and the Rockets are now up 3-1 in that series. Chris Paul led Houston with 27 points. Donovan Mitchell had 25 points for the Jazz.

Tonight, Boston will be in Philadelphia for Game Four at 6:00pm on TNT. The Cavs will host Toronto in the late game immediately following the Celtics-76ers. Both the Celtics and Cleveland are up 3 games to none.

NASCAR . Kevin Harvick rolled the #4 car 400 laps to victory this weekend. Harvick led 201 laps. Clint Bowyer took second place. Three Stewart-Haas Racing cars finished in the top five.

NHL . Tampa Bay took the series away from Boston with a 3-1 win on Sunday. Las Vegas also clinched their series 4-2 with a 3-0 win over San Jose.

Washington plays at Pittsburgh tonight at 7:00pm with a 3-2 series lead. Nashville holds the same advantage over Winnipeg in the late game of the evening.
