Baseball, Softball and Girls tennis in action tonight

Today’s Tribe Sports Report written by the Tribe Sports Network’s Ryan Scott and Dalton Bishop.

Baseball: Coach Scott and his tribe are set to hit I-69 and head to the beautiful Parkview Field in Fort Wayne tonight as they take on Wabash in the 7 o’clock game. The Indians are coming off a tough loss 12-14 on Monday night to Adams central to open up the 2021 campaign. Bats were hot on Monday night in Gas City and the Indians are set for tonight in Fort Wayne.

Girls Tennis: The Girl’s tennis season begins tonight as Coach Fleming and his Lady Indians take on county rival Marion in Gas City. The Ladies are ready to hit the court for the first time in two years. Match time is at 5 pm.

Softball: April 2nd, 2020 was a day many will never forget, not because of the memories that were made but because of the heartbreaking news of the cancellation of Spring Sports in the state of Indiana. For all of the class of 2020 that didn’t get to play their Senior season it is still a struggle to come back and watch. As an announcer for Mississinewa Athletics and knowing what was going to come of the 2020 softball season to receive the news of Spring Sports being cancelled not only was a shock to me but also very heartbreaking. Everyone had high expectations for that team. My heart still to this day breaks for Riley (Mckee), Jenna (Berryhill), Lexi (Cruzan), Alivia (Rice), Haley (Herring)and Aubrey (Tann). Not only does it break for them but for all of the class of 2020 who didn’t get a Senior season. So for me this season and the opportunity to cover Spring Sports for Mississinewa is a little more special. You never realize how thankful and fortunate you are until something is taken away from you. I want to wish Coach Miller, Coach Scott, Coach Fleming, Coach Varner and Coach VanWinkle the very best of luck with their teams this Spring Season.

Although it was tough for everyone, Senior shortstop Kylie Smalley says that last season’s cancellation makes it that much more exciting getting to play this season. “Being able to play this season brings an extraordinary amount of excitement, when we received the news that our season was being cancelled it devastated the entire team” said Smalley. “We should play for that team that did not get that opportunity last year and hold our standards to the highest possible level. We want to show how hard we’ve worked since last year’s cancellation and show up ready to play hard every game”. For fellow Senior Katy Hosier she is taking this season as an opportunity to play the game of Softball a little more to heart. “That feeling of heartbreak as our team was sitting on the gym floor in silence, crying knowing that what Steve (Miller) was about to tell us but even he didn’t want to believe it, is a feeling that I won’t ever forget” said Hosier. “Because of that moment is what makes getting to play this final season that much more exciting”.  The Lady Indians open up the season tonight as they welcome Wapahani to town for a 5pm Varsity start time. You can watch all of the action live on MCSC Athletics YouTube.
