IWU Division II Title Recap, Opening Dates for Spring Sports

Tribe Sports Report

Reminder from Athletic Director Chanse Young, all spring athletes must have a physical on file in the front office before they can participate, try-out, and work with the Spring teams.

MHS Baseball . Opening day for Indians baseball is March 31 when the team travels to Cowan for a 10am game. The first home game is April 4 against Yorktown.

MHS Softball . The Lady Indians will host Marion for a scrimmage on March 31 at 11:00am. Opening day for softball is April 4 at Wapahani with the first home game coming on Saturday, April 7.

MHS Track & Field . On Tuesday, April 3 Anderson Prep and Muncie Burris will be at Mississinewa for the first track meet of the 2018 spring season. Events begin at 5:00pm.

MHS Girls Tennis . The Lady Indians will hold a scrimmage against Pendelton Heights on Monday, April 2 with the first match being played at Marion that Wednesday at 5:00pm.

MHS Boys Golf . The Indians will hit the links on Thursday, April 12 at 5:00pm as they host Southern Wells to open the season. Mississinewa home matches are played at Shady Hills Golf Course.

Tonight’s Events . The RJB Wrestling team will travel to Oak Hill for the CIC wrestling meet. Action on the mat starts at 5:00pm.


Today’s Sports World Update

 

NAIA Men’s Basketball . The Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats won the NAIA Division 2 National Championship last night defeating Saint Francis 84-71. Kyle Mangas was the tournament’s most valuable player. Head Coach Greg Tonagel was named the NAIA Division 2 National Coach of the Year and NABC NAIA  Coach of the Year. The title was the Wildcat’s third national title in five years. Kyle Mangas scored 23 points to lead Indiana Wesleyan, and Derek Hinen scored 24 points for Saint Francis. The Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats will host a reception for the team this evening in Luckey Arena. Follow @IWUWildcats on social media for updates on this event.

NCAA Men’s Basketball . Notre Dame won over Hampton 84-63 in the NIT First Round. Radford will advance to face Villanova as the “First Four” games launched the beginning of March Madness last night. UCLA also lost to the Bonnies of Saint Bonnaventure who will face Florida in the NCAA Round of 64. Butler and Purdue were the only two Indiana-based teams to make the field and will play on Friday.

NCAA Women’s Basketball . Ball State, Purdue, and Indiana will open up action in the Women’s NIT on Thursday. Notre Dame, who received a number one seed in the Women’s NCAA tournament will play on Friday at 5:00pm.

NBA . The Pacers defeated the 76ers last night 101-98 moving to 40-28 on the season. Myles Turner led Indiana with 25 points.

NASCAR . The Auto Club Speedway will host the Monster Energy Series at California on Sunday, March 18. Racing begins at 3:30pm on Fox.

PGA Golf . The Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill will start tomorrow morning. Marc Leishman is the reigning champ. This weekend’s purse is $8.9 million.

iMLB . The Chicago Cubs will be the first game to start on Opening Day of the 2018 season on Thursday, March 29 at 12:30pm as they travel to Miami. The game will be live on ESPN. Jon Lester is slated to start on the mound. Other games on Opening Day that are available on ESPN are Houston and Texas, San Francisco at Los Angeles, and Cleveland at Seattle.
